A beautiful string of freshwater cultured pearls is something every woman loves. Stemming from naturally occurring phenomena, the freshwater cultured pearls industry has been a way of life for pearl farmers in Japan and China. Cultured and natural pearls occur in mussels in much the same way that saltwater pearls occur in oysters in the ocean. Freshwater pearls occur when foreign material gets into a mussel. Just as irritation occurs when a human gets a piece of dirt in his eye, the material irritates the mussel. Thus, the mussel covers the object with a secretion of nacre, a substance it uses to build shells.
Japanese were the first to produce cultured freshwater pearls. By the 1930s, the practice became a commercial business when corps of cultured, faceted freshwater pearl bead collections appeared. Produced almost completely with the nacre substance, many different faceted freshwater pearl bead colors began to form.
