Annabelle is a spoon eater! Here is the story. . .My
basset hound Annabelle has seizures because she
was diagnosed about a year ago with epilepsy which
was actually a misdiagnosis by my former vet.
Anyway, I give her Phenobarbital to control the
seizures. I do this with peanut butter on a spoon.
Now
keep in mind that she really enjoys the peanut butter
as any hound would. And she is not a very bright girl,
but then are any hounds really intelligent? A few
weeks ago Annabelle grabbed the spoon and in two
gulps swallowed it. I wouldn’t have believed it if I
hadn’t seen it for myself. The next day she looked
pretty good after eating a metal spoon but I took her to
the vet with high hopes that she had possibly thrown it
up and after the x ray, I could see that that did not
happen. The vet started giving me a sales pitch like I
was buying a car with regard to the surgery followed
up with phone calls to see if she had "locked in the
deal". It would cost thousands by the time they were
done with me. Now keep in mind that this is a 13 year
old dog with a 12 year life expectancy under normal
circumstances. And, the dog has epilepsy on top of it.
Should I put her through this? I took her home to think
about it and pray for divine intervention on this one.
Kevin told me about a vet he used to have when he
had his dog. So. . .I took her for a second opinion.
The new vet told me that he could control her seizures
to be 95% seizure free. And that she is too old to have
epilepsy. In his opinion, she has a slow growing brain
tumor. The good news here is that she is probably
closer to 10 years old. She is a rescue dog so her
age is not known and that the tumor could grow
slowly for the next several years without any
symptoms. Better yet, with the proper medication, she
would not have nearly as many of the seizures. I was
amazed at the difference in vets . . . . . Annabelle had
the surgery and is walking around like she never
missed a beat. I will probably frame the spoon that
was
removed from the belly so nobody thinks I would feed
them with it when they visit me. I will be driving a bit
further to go to the vet from now on. Annabelle will
never truly know how special Kevin is to her. We do!
